Born with the ability to pursue his dreams, this MBM Civil graduate aspires to contribute to the nation’s development. A man of determination, consistency, and faith. His sheer will power to achieve his dreams stays no less than the Arjuna’s for the bird’s eye. Against all the odds, he achieved what he aimed for. This story is about Er. Tushar Mangal, 2019 batch alumnus who got 55 th rank in prestigious Indian Engineering Services. Failures may break you apart making you go bitter, but Er. Tushar’s memoir teaches us very well how these rugged and scratchy paths with failures at every point leads us to the most beautiful places of the world. Rough days and jaggy nights full of hard work and yet when results being unsatisfactory, makes you introspect deep down. He had many barriers to deal with but he lived up to everyone’s expectations and cleared all the hurdles with grace. They do it well when they say Hard works pay off and this time we have proof.

Alumni of prestigious MBM Engineering college have left thier trances in every possible profession, whether it is Corporate sector, Reasearch & Development, Politics,Social Sector, Sports or in beaurocacy. In this edition of MBM Story, we have chronicled the rivetting life journey of Brigadier Ripu Soodan Retd, an alumnus of the 1988 Civil Engineering batch who chose service of the nation above all life comfort. He was selected through the SSB exam and later was trained in Technical Graduate Course at Indian Military Academy Dehradun to be commissioned into the Corps of Engineers and devoted nearly thirty years in field and peace on many crucial assignments including the Chief Engineer in Border Road Organisation. His contributions and exemplary services with dedication and hard work will always inspire us and strengthen the love and pride for our country.

Sharma was acting Head of ITU Regional Office for Asia-Pacific where he was responsible for use of ICTs for Sustainable development of 38 countries and over 70 private sector agencies in the region designing national digital strategies and roadmaps for countries to fast track digital development.Currently, he is part of Champions for Change in the UN System bringing change as a key element for organizational as well as personal transformation with agility. He is the first Indian citizen positioned as Head of United Nations (ITU) Regional Office for Asia-Pacific.

In 1983, Prof. Divakaran took up a teaching assignment as Professor in the Military School of Engineering at Baghdad run by the then President Saddam Hussain, where he taught blast resistant structures. Conditions in Baghdad were also volatile. On one occasion his brother-in-law, who was also living there some miles away and working for a sewerage project in Baghdad, invited Dr. Divakaran’s family. There he met an elderly Arab gentleman who was introduced as the manager of that firm. Next week, Dr. Divakaran received summons from the Chief of Security of a deadly wing of Saddam Hussain accusing him of violating terms of his agreement by helping an Indian company. He sought all details of his brother-in-law before he was released. “However, Arab families there were quite cordial and hospitable” – he remembers.

The 21-year long period in ICID gave Er. Sharma a unique opportunity of interacting with the top experts from all over the world in various fields like Irrigation & Drainage, Flood control, environment, capacity building, sustainable development, resource planning etc. He also interacted with technocrats, bureaucrats, planners, Ministers, and Prime Ministers in the governments of various countries regarding I&D projects, food security, drought, and environmental planning, etc. Er. Sharma worked in collaboration with several international organizations like FAO, UNESCO, IWMI, IWRA, UNDP, Global Water Partnership, International Water Association, IPTRID, etc. in various important Strategy Dialogues. He was also drafted for evaluation of the International Network on Irrigation and Drainage in countries of UK, The Netherlands, and France. He represented ICID in several international initiatives of GWP (in Sweden, Vietnam etc.); World Water Forum in Japan (Kyoto), Mexico (Mexico), and Turkey (Istanbul); WWF (Switzerland); World Agricultural Forum (St. Louise, USA); World Water Council (Montpellier, France), IPTRID (UK, The Hague,), etc.

Er. Agarwal has received a number of national and international awards. In 1973, He received the National Award (Railway Minister’s Vishishtha Seva Medal) for Track Modernization of Indian Railways. In 1993, he received the “Indira Gandhi Raj Bhasha Award” by the President of India for the best original book written in Rajbhasha for Professionals. His name was recommended for the Padma Shri award by Indian Railways for four continuous years.
